The Computer Engineering undergraduate program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org.
The mission of the Computer Engineering (CMPE) undergraduate program is to offer a program that attracts students of the highest caliber and to provide them with an education combining depth and breadth in the design and engineering of computing systems while taking advantage of the diverse resources of a large liberal arts university. Such an education, prepares them to immediately assume positions of leadership in both technological and management capacities. Furthermore, it allows them to pursue further graduate studies toward careers in engineering and applied science research and education as well as other career paths.
Program Educational Objectives
Graduates in Computer Engineering will:
- Successfully integrate the fundamentals of computer engineering and design/realization practices to develop innovative solutions to complex technological problems;
- Possess excellent communication skills, excel in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams, and have an appreciation for non-technical disciplines;
- Engage in careers or graduate studies in computer engineering,
networking and telecommunications engineering, embedded and real-time
systems, robotics, parallel and distributed computing, or their chosen
- Be recognized in their chosen fields for their leadership, integrity and sensitivity to global societal issues.
The minimum requirements for the BSE degree in Computer Engineering are:
- Six Mathematics courses
- Four and one half Natural Science courses
- Seventeen Engineering courses
- Two and a half Technical Elective courses
- Seven Social Science, Humanities, or Technology in Business and Society courses
- Three Free Elective courses
Students graduating with a degree in Computer Engineering have:
- an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering
- an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
- an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability
- an ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams
- an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
- an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
- an ability to communicate effectively
- the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal context
- a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning
- a knowledge of contemporary issues
- an ability to use the technique, skills and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
